Work, Rest + Play
5 December 2015 – 8 February 2016
We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. Source unknown
With a playful, child's eye Work, Rest + Play will explore the idea and aspects of the cycle of our daily lives , similarities and differences, the ways in which these cycles have dramatically changed or perhaps changed very little. The emphasis of the exhibition will be on the play parts of the cycle to coincide with the end of year.
This summer forget work and rest, instead come and experience the serious activity of PLAY! Our latest exhibition will explore spontaneous and joyful, subversive and amusing characteristics of play in contemporary Australian art.
To be playful is not to be trivial or frivolous, or to act as though nothing of consequence will happen. James P. Carse
From child’s play to family summer holidays and learning through play, featuring humour and the rise of popular culture, the exhibition will investigate how the notion of play can be approached in art when we go beyond the stereotype or the popular interpretations of play.
Man's most serious activity is play. George Santayana
Terms like play playground playful have become a part of the common vocabulary in recent art. Play can mean experimenting, stepping into different realities, treating viewers as playmates or even changing identities.
After work and rest comes play (the best!) See how artists explore the serious business of play in Australian life and art.
People tend to forget that play is serious. David Hockney
And don’t forget to drop into the Ice Cool Art Lab! Open all summer, whenever the Gallery is. Full of tons of cool, drop-in art activities for young creatives.
