Dog Off Leash Areas
Under the Animal Companion Animal Act 1998, dogs must be on a adequate chain, cord or leash when in a public place. Dogs can however be run off lead, in an approved dog off leash area, if it is under effective control of a competent person.
Dog owners constitute a significant proportion of residents using parks as a safe and effective way to exercise and socialise their dogs. Council staff have acknowledged there is a need to provide opportunities for residents to run their dogs off leash and thus a number of areas have been set aside for this purpose. There are currently four (4) off leash dog areas within the Hawkesbury.
- Pool Park – corner of Ham and Cox Streets South Windsor – this area is fenced with doggy bags and bins provided.
- Peel Park – Arthur Phillip Drive North Richmond – this area is fenced with doggy bags and bins provided.
- Yarramundi Reserve – Springwood Road Agnes Banks – this area is not fenced
- Pound Paddock – Corner of Blacktown and Bourke Street, Richmond – this small area is fenced with doggy bags and bins provided
- Deerubbin Park - Greenway Crescent onto Cornwallis Road, Windsor.
Each site has a sign outlining conditions of use. Non compliance can lead to penalties being applied.
