Council welcomes next generation of workers
4 March 2025
Hawkesbury City Council has welcomed 11 new staff members into apprenticeships, cadetships and traineeships working across six departments of Council.
The roles, which run from 6 months to four years, will see young people work and complete their qualifications in accounting, civil construction, civil engineering, customer experience, environmental health, parks and gardens, and planning.
Mayor Les Sheather said it was gratifying to employ so many young people on their journey into rewarding and productive careers at Council and beyond.
“We are one of the largest employers in the area and more than 50% of our staff live in our local government area, so we are absolutely invested in the wellbeing of our community.
“Careers in local government are very rewarding. Council’s staff members are working here because they want to make a difference to our community and they enjoy the benefits of working close to home in an undeniably beautiful part of Sydney. We look forward to working with our newest staff members, to help them flourish in their careers and become part of the Hawkesbury Council family.”
One of the new staff members, Rhys McDermott, is a Trainee in the Customer Experience team - the high-performing team is the first point of contact for our customers over the phone and in-person. They also deliver essential administrative support across 50 services.
Rhys said, “The culture at council has been very friendly and inclusive and l have enjoyed my time here so far. My team is very knowledgeable and friendly. l know l can turn to the team and they will provide me positive and constructive feedback.
“I have already learnt many different things about working in a corporate environment, from time- management skills to communication, and the importance of legal documents. l am looking forward to the rest of my traineeship and hopefully it leads to a continuing role.”
