Homeless pets win big in major shelter revamp

Dogs and cats waiting for their new forever home will now do so in far more comfort thanks to a $375,000 revamp of the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter.

The funding, provided through the NSW Local Government Recovery Grants Program (Flood), also significantly strengthens the resilience of the shelter during emergencies.

All dog kennels have now received underfloor heating, which will significantly improve the comfort of animals during colder months. This provides major benefits to their health and their temperament, helping maximise their chances of rehoming.

The cattery has also had a major revamp, with new kitty condos and a meeting space now open. The old male cattery has been overhauled to provide an intake and quarantine area for sick cats that may arrive at the shelter so they can receive the TLC they need without sharing their bugs with others.

During emergencies, the shelter can now switch over from mains power to a back up generator. This will keep the animal shelter operating in times of emergency, enabling staff to keep the animals safe and warm by not losing power.

Directional and site signage has also been given a colourful and friendly makeover, improving the appearance of the shelter and making it more welcoming for visitors and prospective adopters.

Adoption costs are $49-$99 for dogs and cats, which includes microchipping, lifetime council registration, desexing and first vaccination.
