Come along on a Hawkesbury Bushcare bird walk with Eric the Birdman

28 September 2023

Bird walk - Hawkesbury BushcareIn the lead up to National Bird Week, Hawkesbury City Council is offering its Bushcare volunteers and other community members the chance to enjoy a guided morning walk and talk about local bird watching and a weeding activity on Thursday, 28 September at 9am sharp at McMahon Park, Kurrajong.

Participants will learn new skills in identifying birds as well as how to use the various bird apps. that are now available on mobile phones. No Bushcare or bird watching experience is required.

McMahon Park along Little Wheeny Creek offers a plethora of plant and bird diversity and it is home to many birds which are seen in our local gardens. Such a variety of habitats in a small area means we are likely to see a wide variety of bird species on this early morning walk. After the bird watching, participate in an introductory Bushcare experience to help restore the native bird habitat at McMahon Park.

Registration is essential as places are limited for this free event. For details and to register, visit www.eventbrite.com.au/e/hawkesbury-bushcare-bird-tours-with-eric-the-birdman-tickets-721853983697

National Bird Week 16–22 October 2023

Celebrate National Bird Week by taking part in the Aussie Bird Count run by BirdLife Australia. This annual event is now in its 10th year and is one of Australia’s largest citizen science projects. Each year people of all ages head out to their front yards, backyards, courtyards, parks and play areas to count how many birds they see in a 20 minute period and provide a snapshot of Australia’s more common bird species.

Collecting this data at the same time each year allows us to look at the trends in our bird communities over time. Think of birds as a barometer for nature, as their health and wellbeing is one of nature’s best indicators. Participants of the count report feeling closer to nature, along with an improved sense of well-being and lowered stress levels.
